Developing Fraction Sense:
Below are some activities that you can do with your student to help them become more comfortable working with fractions.
· Fraction Instruction and Activity:
Worksheets:
Use the following worksheets to help your students become familiar with fractions. Encourage your students to practice saying the fraction name while doing the worksheets.
· Numerators and Denominators:
What is a numerator? Answer: A numerator is the top number in a fraction: (for example: 1/2)
What is a denominator? Answer: A denominator is the bottom number in a fraction (for example: 1/2). I remember denominator because downstairs and denominator both begin with the letter “d”.
· Colorful Fraction Circles
The students are given practice coloring parts of a circle without using a fraction.
· Color the Fractions:
The students are given a fraction and are asked to color in a box that represents the fraction.
· Fraction Worksheet-Slicing the Pie
The students are asked to slice the pie, shade the part/s, and name the fraction.
