Learn about what your student shouldn’t do while in Barton…
Students should NOT do the K12 Phonics or Spelling. The Barton Program will meet the reading and spelling needs.
Students should not do any outside reading of the Barton Program, until they are toward the end of Level 4. The reason is to prevent bad habits from continuing to develop. If you find them hiding under the covers reading, that’s fine, but please don’t ask them to read except on the Scantron Performance Series, DIBELS, CSAP, or other mandatory assessments. Even though your students will not be reading the novels, literature, or other subject areas they should still be receiving the content by someone reading it to them or using technology such as Learning Ally, text to voice software, such as, Natural Reader, and other resources while they are working their way through the Barton Levels. The day will come quickly when they can read this on their own.
**Please note, this is what Susan Barton highly recommends, but you as the parent need to make the final decision.
For High School Students: This may not be possible in your situation; however, we do recommend using assistive "text to voice" technology, such as Natural Reader to help with the volume of reading.
